The Impact Of Music On Young Minds

Did you know that by playing and listening to music, the brain releases endorphins (AKA the ‘Happiness Hormone’)? It’s no wonder our babies light up at the sound of our voices when we sing to them, or they hear a catchy song on the radio!

According to one study, when babies and young kids listen to music, “…their auditory and prefrontal cortexes look different. These are the regions of the brains in charge of processing both music and speech.”

As if that weren’t interesting enough, when young kids shift from listening to actually making music, they engage their fine motor skills by holding an object or instrument and using it to make sound. All of this movement involves multiple areas of their brains and creates a “…bridge between the two hemispheres of the brain, which allows messages to get across the brain faster and across different routes.”

It’s no surprise that music goes beyond just creating a sense of feeling good, and we can’t ignore the positive impact it has on our children’s young minds. It’s our job to create the opportunity for our kids to experience music on multiple levels of listening AND playing.

Not sure where to start? We can help! Little Land is the perfect space to explore the magic of listening to and creating music through our Music Exploration class! It was designed to provide children with an experience that introduces them to various types of music and encourages exploration of musical instruments and develops a personal sense of musicality. Our curriculum has been developed by therapists and musicians to increase awareness of basic musical concepts, as well as improve attention, auditory comprehension, coordination, and confidence!
